    I forgot which one, but in one of the Harry Potter books, he’s very negative throughout most of it.

    It’s a play, but…Waiting for Godot, but Samuel Beckett;
    Metamorphosis by Kafka
    The Master by Colin Toibin
    Bartelby the Scrivener by Herman Melville
    Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

    And most Existentialist works.

    Try The Amulet of Samarkand by J. Stroud. It is part of a trilogy, but the book stands alone well. The main character (Bartimaeus) is a sarcastic, pessimistic poltergeist-type spirit with a wry sense of humor and a Why-me?attitude.

    Hope this helps! Good luck on your project!
