The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.

A man in betrayed by some cohorts and wrongfully sent to prison. In prison, he befriends another inmate and learns of a legendary treasure located on the isle of Monte Cristo. Thus begins his long quest for revenge against those who wronged him.

I read it last summer and enjoyed it. There is a movie based off the book, I liked that too, but the book is WAY different than the movie.

Seconding Monte Cristo, and recommending two more great swashbucklers (excellent for relaxation), one recent and one not-so-recent:

    * The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch (and its sequel, Red Seas Under Red Skies–a third book is due out this summer if I recall correctly). Brutal, funny, highly entertaining, with snarky protagonists and a fascinating, Venice-with-a-twist setting.

    * Scaramouche, Rafael Sabatini. The book begins, He was born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad.– which is the best opening line ever written. I won’t spoil any of the details. Fun, pulse-pounding (even for something written almost 90 years ago now). Plus, the film from the ’50s with Stewart Granger and Mel Ferrer contains the second-best swordfight ever (Rob Roy contains the best.)

Something fun and light to read this summer would be the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. There’s 13 books in the series 14 comes out on Tuesday (yay). It’s about a girl turned bounty hunter with the help of her crazy friends and family. There’s also a love triangle between two hot men. These books are sooo funny and the best age group is 17+

I highly encourage teens and young adults to read The Drifters by James Michener. A wonderful coming of age book!

Maybey A Million Little Pieces. It’s about a druggie in rehab but it’s written brilliantly.
