The style at the time was rock and roll. Think rolling stones or jimmy hendrex. That type of rock.

The 60s and 70 were very eclectic music wise.

    We had Southern soul
    surf music
    girl groups
    Motown Sound
    British Invasion
    Feminist
    Folk
    Folk rock
    Psychedelic Rock
    Heavy metal
    Hard rock

If I had to guess I would say you are probably thinking of psychedelic rock. Like Janis Joplin and the Jefferson Airplane – Starship

psychadelic rock or folk rock were the two primary popular music forms.

psychedelic rock in it’s time. Now called classic rock by the majority. I used to live in a city where the local radio station had a program called psychedelic psunday. 12 hours of this era of music.

My favorite would have to be Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter In my humble opinion, one of the definitive songs of the 60′s.
