Looks like you are a girly girl-so I can help you As far as the boy fiction goes, I’m sadly in the dark.
I absolutely loved the Bell Jar and Girl Interupted when I was in Jr. High. I enjoyed the dark angsty side of feminism. Anne Rice wrote a few Vampire novels. I like Vampires and all the fantasy type- Too many people are going to reccomend the Twilight series, which, while it’s good-might bore you a little.
The Girl with a Pearl Earing was good. Don’t watch the movie, dissapointing. The Phillip Pullman Trillogy, His Dark Materials, is great for older people if you can understand the subtleties beyond boy girl fighting to save the world .
If you like words, read Ella Minnow Pea. Great fun read.
And Please don’t rule out Harry Potter. I didn’t start them until I was about 23 and they have evolved into my favorite series.
Anansi Boys by Gaiman (fantasy)
Magic Kingdom for Sale-Sold by Brooks (fantasy)
Chocolate Chip Cookie Mystery by Fluke (mystery)
Going Postal by Pratchett (humor)
Marley and Me by Gorman (non-fiction)
Five People You Meet in Heaven by Albom (inspirational)
Angels and Demons by Brown (action)
Green Mile by King (fantasy/historical)
My Sister’s Keeper by Picoult (tear jerker)
Book Thief by Zusak (historical)
Poison Study by Snyder (fantasy)
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Cadavers by Roach (non-fiction)
I strongly suggest looking into the titles for the ALEX Awards. These are adult books that appeal to young adults
Two of the most awesome books I’ve read in the last while are The Kite Runner and The Time Traveler’s Wife. And I’ll second the suggestion of Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons which I think is superior to his more famous DaVinci Code.
Kite Runner is simply one of the most profound pieces of fiction I’ve ever read.
The Time Traveler’s Wife is much more a romance novel than science fiction…but it is the original style of the book which I found so appealing. It really doesn’t fit into any genre.
Angels and Demons is just good old suspense, action, and mystery with engaging characters. A really fun and fast-paced read.
Yeah, they’re written for an adult audience, but you’re there already.
And I was 40 when I began reading Harry Potter…wonderful series with some very adult themes developed in the later books.
Mutiny on the Bounty. Moby ****.
Isaac Asimov’s Robot novels.

Night by Elie Wiesel, First They Killed My Father by Ung Loung, Dracula by Bram Stoker are all good books.
