The red X’s mean movie maker can’t locate the file path to find the pic, video etc.Movie maker doesn’t really import a copy of these assets, it simply notes the location of the file on your hard drive. If you delete that file or move it to a new location, WMM will get the sulks because it can’t find it and reward you with a great big red cross.
You can ask Movie Maker to find the missing files by right clicking on the red cross and choosing ‘browse for file’.
Its odd that these files are missing if they are all stored on your hard drive, this usually happens if the missing files were imported from a usb drive which was removed. Hope this helps!
