As for light aircraft, have a look at The Legend of Cessna by Jeff Rodengen. It details the complete history of the biggest player in private aircraft and builder of fabulous light jets.
Though it’s focused primarily on military aviation, Air Power by Stephen Budiansky is an excellent resource. (Man, I think I’m starting to talk about this book a lot) This is the most exhaustive resource on aviation I’ve been able to find. It covers development from the very beginning to today. There’s a significant amount of civil aviation history in it, as well, especially abot the early days (1930s to 1950s). I’d call it required reading for any aviation history buff.
Another book I’d suggest is Flight, 100 Years of Aviation By R.G. Grant. I haven’t read this one, as it was only recently suggested to me by a friend, but I’m looking forward to it. It’s description on Amazon looks good and two good friends have given it a good review.
This is a great topic to read about. Aviation and widespread air travel have definitely had a profound effect on every aspect of our lives. I hope this helps. Good luck!
Try Hard Landings it is a great history of the commercial airline industry.
HARD LANDING is great, try GROUNDED, too.
