What happens if you owe a bunch of late fees at a movie rental place and then you die before you pay them?10 comments to What happens if you owe a bunch of late fees at a movie rental place and then you die before you pay them? You must be logged in to post a comment. |

Technically, your heirs have to pay, but I think they’d be glad to get the movie back and forget about the fees.
some one will have to pay on your behalf…and return the movies
i would think you wouldn’t have to pay for them then. Maybe they send it to a family member. But I honestly think they wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
I think the rental company can sue your estate to recover the fees. If there are assets in your estate, the rental company might be able to get its money.
Of course, it may cost the rental company more in legal fees than your rental fees are worth. In that case the rental company would just forget it.
They probably just erase the debt and take it for a loss. Unless you shared the account w/someone then they would be responsible for it.
You find them standing there at the Day of Judgement ,asking for late fee plus penalty out of your list of good deeds ,if one has any.
Usually, debt like this would be forgiven.
The movie rental place will quickly become acquainted with your immediate heirs (or at least the rest of the family).
I believe they will immediately revoke your membership for such a weak excuse.
The movie rental place owner will probably awake in the middle of the night determined to sue, at his earliest convenience, the estate of the kid who croaked, and if that kid was broke and left nothing behind, his/her mother will probably pay the debt, as they always end up doing for dead beat kids.
