I have approximately 80 books on my shelf, simply sorted by author’s last name.

    Good luck!

First arrange them by their subjects. When you have that done, arrange each subject by the authors last name alphabetically.

I don’t have a system, but need one as badly as you do. I manage a small bookstore, and here are the major categories we carry: fiction (which is broken down by classics, fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, romance, mystery), family life, relationships, self-help, medicine, diet fitness, foreign language, business/finance, computers, science, games, cooking, sports, history, biography, and social science. You could probably condense these groups to make your own categories, and many books will list the category (i.e. true crime, fiction, etc) on the jacket or one of the first pages that lists publishing info. Hope this made sense.

Small at the top, big at the bottom…

Personally, I group my books by author on my general shelf, and I then have an additional set of bookshelves for autographed or rare editions. The second set is closest to the door in case of fire. My coffee table and reference books go on the bottom shelves just to keep my shelving from becoming too top heavy. I also have readerware software to catalog my books, and have purchased a bar code reader to make putting them in my computer a bit easier. Someday I hope to have everything catalogued in my system. And yes, I am very compulsive about organizing my books. This may be self evident.

I’m like you–I have more books than room. I try to keep them in categories–humor, science fiction, classics, reference, history, etc. If you still have too many to be able to find them within the category, try either subcategories or alphabetical order. Be sure to leave a little space, though, because you’re sure to get more!

I am like you. The books which I use most are very close to me. The books which I don’t use are put far off to me. And then I have arranged my books according to my wish.
I like mystery novels most. Sherlock Holmes hold a prominent place in my library.

I’m a librarian, so I tend to lump things together by subject first (similar to the Dewey Decimal system). I think that if you create a genre scheme, and then alphabetize by author your collection will be well organized and be easy to navigate. You might also want to read At Home with Books by Estelle Ellis, et. al. It gives excellent tips about how to organize your collection and provides photos. Below is a link to information from Amazon

I have mine broken out by fiction and non-fiction.

For fiction books, I arrange by author’s last name.

For non-fiction books, I arrange by the dewey decimal system. Before I shelve the book in my home library, I look it up in my library’s public catalog to find out the correct number, then I write it on a label that I attach to the spine.

It’s like having my own private public library!

well what you could do is set up a database on your computer and sort all the books in there by whatever you want and then put then in order of what you have then in your computer and then will always be able to find what book you have and where it is i have about 3000 book and thats what i did and it works great.

I sort my books by genre and then by authors name. There are some over sized books and they are kept separately, but that’s it.
