I have that program on my Mac and don’t really remember how I put music on it by heart, but try going to the help window and type in Add Music – it should direct you quite easily.
If you can play those songs through itunes then i would uninstall then reinstall imovie or delete its preference file which is in user/library/preferences. If you can’t play music through itunes go to itunes/preferences/advanced and tell itunes where to find your itunes music folder. If that doesn’t work make a test user and see if they problem happens when on another user account. If nothing works make an appointment at a genius bar its free even if the machine is out of warranty.
