Ebay also has half.com, which is used books sold by private parties. It is generally a lot cheaper, but you are relying on another private party to ship the book and describe the condition. My experiences have been pretty good so far. Otherwise I would go with amazon.
Use Amazon.com and buy through their used section. Whenever you look for a book, it has a listing for alternatively buying it for less used. And if something happens, the seller will usually often a discount, and if they don’t, you can file an appeal with Amazon and get a full refund.
There are also some great websites that allow you to trade books, CD’s, DVD’s etc. See my profile for link to titletrader and paperbackswap. This allows you to get rid of an item you no longer want and get something you do want in return. Titletrader is awesome because you can trade books, dvd’s, cd’s, games and vhs tapes. So if you get rid of a book you may be able to get a dvd in exchange. Paperbackswap is only for books and has lots available. On both sites you can buy credits for like $3.50 and that would get you a book. Most paperbacks are 1 credit, hardbacks 2 credits, dvd’s 3 credits etc. Also both sites have forums where people offer sales like two or three books for one credit. I just joined about 6 months ago and love it.

I’ve bought used books from both Amazon and Barnes and Noble and never had issues.
