How long does it take a hardcover book to decompose above ground?

depends on the climate/weather conditions. sunlight will make the paper faded and brittle, rain will make the paper swell and will help the binding and covers come apart faster. repeated soakings and dryings in the sun will probably completely destroy the book into unrecognizeable pulp/dust in…..i’d say a year or so. maybe more.
