The Purple Pussycat! I still have that book from when I was a little kid. It about a cat stuffed animal that comes alive at night. It’s really cute! It’s just a short book.
Anything with lots of pictures. Chapters has national geographic juniors. They’re good for now and for when they get older and can read.

well, these are the ones my brothers enjoy and they’re 4 and 5. =)
Well, I’d have to say The Cat in the Hat.
We bought a tiny board book at Walmart of all places, for 97 cents. It is called Kittens. I mean it is tiny. Like 2 1/2 inches square, with maybe 10 pages. Just photos of kittens with their names on each page.
My daughter memorized it at 18 months. Just simple stuff.
I have to recommend SKIPPYJON JONES AND THE DOG HOUSE. Your son will probably love it. It is a crazy book about a siamese cat who believes he is a chihuahua. The book also mixes a little silly (and incorrect) hispanic language with a lot of english words that aren’t commonly used. My cousin started reading them when he was 4.
Skippyjon is the name of the cat, and I think there are about 7 skippyjon books on the market.
It all depends on the kid. My best advice would be to take him to the bookstore or library and let him choose some books. It will make him all the more excited when it is time to read them too…
hello,
trust me and get these great books!!!!!! It’s the middle of the night here and i don’t have much time for an answer but will try:
1. Duncan and Delores: 2 sisters have a cat. cat likes to be with big sister more because she’s quieter therefore doesn’t bother the cat. But Delores, younger one, wants to the cat to like her, so it’s a humorous, warm account of how she finally gets the cat to like her, with the obvious lesson built in in a genuinely endearing way. FUNNY BOOK!
2. Charlie Anderson (or Andersen?) worth looking up! beautiful, dreamy absolutely gorgeous award-winning (or nominated) pastel drawings throughout. Artistic inspiration everywhere for children. Cover picture of cat is absolutely priceless. Book is about 2 sisters who find a cat who sleeps with them and then disappears for the day. Then they discover that he goes to someone else’s house by day, so it’s like he has 2 families, 2 homes, and therefore 2 names (the girls call him one name, the cat’s ‘real’ family another) The book is so inspiring artistically and I have tried to follow the advice given me to not read any books to my kids that I don’t really like myself, and that books should be beautiful. So I stopped with the cheesily-illustrated ones so I mostly stick to the many classics or might-become classics (at least something worth hanging on to) fyi in charlie andersen the girls are from a single-parent home. not a huge part of the story but worthwhile to know since so many kids are in that situation these days.
3. wonderful classic: Smudge, about kittens with the characteristic christmas-treeish tails when they are young, getting into mischief. Charcoal drawings make it a beautiful classic hardcover. never underestimate the pleasure and solace good art in books provides to children, however consciously or not.
4. Julie Andrews (yep, THE Julie Andrews) wrote a book about a cat’s adventures on a ship that my daughter liked: Little Bo
At work we read Our cat cuddles it is very popular and its such a great story.
You can see it here:
Also Millions of cats written especially for the preschool age. Find it here (you can read through it) :
My daughter LOVES Where’s My Cat? by Eric Carle. She’s had it since she was one and now she is three and can repeat the phrases. At the end of the book there is a Mom cat with a bunch of kittens, I started doing the Meow Mix song (Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow) while I point at the cats over and over again she does it now. It also demonstrates the various types of cat species out there.
I love cats by the way so I approve of encouraging your sons love of cats.
