Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracey Kidder. It is a true story about a Harvard doctor who established a hospital for people in Haiti. He specialized in multiple drug resistant tuberculosis. It’s hard to describe the book, but it is very good. The doctor has a very interesting history and is very humble about his achievements.
I know you wanted books about medicine, but since you are an aspiring doctor, I felt this would be relevant to you. It depicts the education level and extra-curricular activities this doc did to get into Harvard Med School, as well as his philanthropy. He actually got an MD and a PhD in Anthropology at the same time at Harvard. He even won a couple of the genius award grants to help him run his practice in Haiti. It truly is an amazing story. ALSO, you do learn a bit about MDR-TB and the techniques of administering medicine to afflicted patients. It is a challenge, because their tuberculosis has become resistant to drugs, so the doctors have to experiment with ways of giving these people effective medicine. It also talks about epidemiology, because AIDS (also addressed in the book) and MDR-TB is rampant in Haiti and the book addresses this.
Good luck with your studies
It’s wonderful that reading is an enjoyed pastime that you have; however, the last thing that you should be worried about right now is medical school/books if you are a sophomore. High school only happens once, so enjoy.
